Cloud-Native Observability: The Many-Faceted Benefits of Structured and Unified Logging—A Multi-Case Study

Background: Cloud-native software systems often have a much more decentralized structure and many independently deployable (horizontally) scalable components, making it complicated to create shared consolidated picture of the overall system state. Today, observability is understood as triad collecting processing metrics, distributed tracing data, logging. The result complex composed three stovepipes whose data are difficult correlate. Objective: This study analyzes whether these historically emerged logs, metrics traces could be handled in integrated way with straightforward instrumentation approach. Method: applied an action research methodology used mainly industry–academia collaboration common engineering. design utilized iterative cycles, including one long-term use case. Results: presents unified logging library for Python architecture that uses structured evaluation shows several thousand events per minute easily processable. Conclusions: results indicate unification current possible without necessity develop utterly new toolchains.
